Helpful Tip: Re-apply Flower Food to Encourage Blooms

As the summer drags on, many of our fruits and flowers around the garden are shutting down. Part of this is due to the hot weather. Part of this has to do with a lack of fertilizer.

For many years, I have only applied plant food in the spring when planting containers and flowering annuals throughout the garden. However, after a couple of months that food is most definitely been used up and our plants are in need of more nutrition!

August is a great time to apply a well-rounded plant food that will encourage new growth and, most importantly, new blooms! Just look for a fertilizer that has an N-P-K fertilizer ratio that emphasizes the middle digit. The P stands for Phosphorous, which is very important for encouraging new roots development and new flower buds. You will notice this formula on every bag of plant food. Synthetic fertilizers will often have more elevated numbers, where as organic fertilizers will have more subtle numbers.
